District Office Closed (posted 3/16/2020)

Dear El Camino Real District Pastors, SPRC Chairs, and Lay Leaders,

We will follow the direction of Santa Clara, Contra Costa and Alameda Counties and close the district office until the order to shelter in place is lifted. This order can be found on County websites including sccgov.org   I expect that those of you in these counties have also closed your offices.  Whatever your location, please follow the guidelines of your respective County and the State of California.  At this time, all congregations within our District should suspend in-person worship. We are not able to meet in person, but know that I am thinking of you and available in other ways.

I continue to receive prayers and offers of help from clergy as well as lay persons, which reminds me that the Spirit is very much at work!  Today, I received a note from a pastor in Alabama assuring me that I am being lifted up in prayer.  One pastor in the district responded to my letter I sent on Saturday that she is willing to spend most of her church’s discretionary funds to support whoever is in need.

There are more questions than answers right now, which generally produces much anxiety and confusion.  However, I am confident that we will eventually come out on the other end being stronger as a community of faith and followers of Christ.  I ask you to watch over one another and assist one another with special attention paid to all who are 65 and older and/or with medical conditions that force them to be isolated.  I believe all pastors and lay persons are being called to care for people in your community as well as those BEYOND your local church.  Please be attentive to other pastors and churches in your circuit.  Please be attentive to other churches in the district that are facing problems they are not able to resolve on their own.

I will be joining the Extended and Appointive Cabinet meeting via ZOOM over the next four days.  I ask you to hold us in your prayer.  I ask you to hold Bishop Carcaño in your prayer.  I will communicate with you as much as possible around and between meetings.  Texts and emails will be the ways to reach me this week.  I may not be able to answer immediately, but I promise I eventually will!

In Christ,

D.S. Shinya Goto
